Nech Sar National Park | Crocodiles, Hippos & Rift Valley

Nech Sar National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most beautiful wildlife destinations. Located near Arba Minch in the Great Rift Valley, the park covers 514 square kilometers of grasslands, woodlands, and lakeside habitats.

The park takes its name from the pale grass that covers its central plains. These open landscapes provide an ideal habitat for Burchell’s zebra, Grant’s gazelle, and the endemic Swayne’s hartebeest.

In addition, the park lies between Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo. This unique location creates a rich ecosystem that supports a wide variety of wildlife and bird species.

One of the most popular activities is a boat trip on Lake Chamo. Visitors can observe large groups of hippos and the famous “Crocodile Market,” where some of Africa’s largest Nile crocodiles gather along the shoreline.

The lake also supports large Nile perch and attracts many water birds. Meanwhile, the surrounding Amaro Hills provide a dramatic backdrop for photography and sightseeing.
