Simien Mountains National Park | Roof of Africa

Simien Mountains National Park is one of Ethiopia’s most spectacular natural destinations. Established in 1966, Simien Mountains National Park became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978 because of its unique landscapes and rich biodiversity.

The park rises into the Ethiopian Highlands and forms the famous “Roof of Africa.” It includes Mount Ras Dashen, which stands at 4,543 meters and ranks as the fourth-highest peak in Africa. Erosion shaped the dramatic scenery over millions of years. It created deep valleys, sharp cliffs, and striking basalt formations.

Visitors call Simien Mountains National Park a natural masterpiece. The landscape offers wide views, steep escarpments, and dramatic mountain scenery. Early explorers described it as a land of “stupendous crags” and “deep gorges.”

The park protects rare and endemic wildlife. You can see the Walia Ibex, Gelada Baboon, and Ethiopian Wolf here. These species live only in Ethiopia and make the park very special.

Trekkers and nature lovers visit Simien Mountains for adventure and wildlife experiences. The park offers some of the best hiking routes in Africa.

The best time to visit is from October to May. The rainy season runs from June to September and can make travel difficult. Nights become very cold from November to December, but the clear skies give amazing views.
